CHAPTER 20
INTO THE RETCH ZONE
| Camp III, located well below the summit trail, was notched into jumbled, angled countryside. Finding or building a level platform was difficult, and several camping platforms had to be cut into the slope. The construction of these platforms fell upon Blanteev and Needlemeyer, upon arrival earlier both went to work with the nylon, rope and shovels after clearing with the brush axe and snowshoe work. But now neither hiker thought it would be a good idea to pull the makeshift camp, after spending a night surviving the ice storm, and waking up to, if anything, what seemed to a continuation of the precipitation, but slightly warmer. At breakfast they realized that this would have to do, this was their one chance to make this summit, even if the weather certainly was not cooperating...
